"Upset" - Year 1, Day 64

"I'm upset." The eight-year-old declared to the room full of adults.  This was her very first dinner party and she had dressed in all of her very best pieces of clothing. These were the ones that she had saved at the side of her closet, carefully hung on her best hangers (the thick plastic ones with tabs to hang dresses inset into the triangle thing), without any creases (she checked), and no dog hair anywhere. She thought she looked like Audrey Hepburn in A Breakfast at Tiffany's  or at least Charade.  She was wearing jewelry that she was going to "grow into", but it was expensive looking. She was wearing the little black dress that maybe poofed out a little more on her tiny frame than Ms. Hepburn, but the sunglasses! Those were perfect. It was her first dinner party and she was a vision in black. And no one noticed. The party was full of what her grandmother had colloquially referred to as "dips" and not one of them saw her. She had even tried l...

Incorporate Your Business - Year 1, Day 59

Step one for any entrepeneur is to incorporate your business, right? No. Step number, like 56, is to incorporate. Step one is think of an idea. Step two is to develop the idea, and think of a business model. Then come up with governance documents and a website and an address and a phone number and then go out and find at least three people that you can convince this is a solid business plan and an idea that they can actually believe in. Then you can incorporate your business. You send in the document saying, "Hello New York. I would like the opportunity to run a Non-Profit organization within your borders pending approval by the IRS." Wait... did I not say it was a non-profit? Oh yeah. Incorporate your non-profit after getting three people to be your Board of Directors, and having them believe in your charitable idea, and so on. This can take months (it has taken 59 days so far), and will likely take a little bit longer before I can say exactly who my Board of Directors is, a...

The Next Chapter - Year 1, Day 48

I have been alive for forty-eight days. On June 26, 2026, I left my job as the Technical Theater Director and District Theater Coordinator at Scarsdale High School. I did not have another job lined up. I had ideas about what I wanted to do, but nothing concrete. I could go into exactly why I left this position, but focusing on the past and what it meant to me (good or bad) is not the purpose behind this blog. I am here to write. Again. I am here to start the process of writing my thoughts down so that I may become a better writer... again. I once knew how to do this. I wrote an 80,000 word treatise on the Design and Redesign of A Midsummer Night's Dream  at the Royal Shakespeare Company from 1970 to 2000 called In the Shadow of Peter Brook . I have since read what I wrote there, and what I wrote in the blog that accompanied that thesis, and I have to say that I did a pretty good job. Now, I have to find a different focus, and different purpose. I am scared out of my mind. The...
